Isolation Creation 1

FORTITUDE :: an #isolationcreation self-portrait (aka a portrait photographer trying to keep busy in the time of COVID-19)

This one actually wasn't conceived because of the COVID situation - it's been in my sketchbook for more than a year, but I had stopped making work like this. When I decided the other day to start making self portraits again, I opened the sketchbook up for some inspiration and this one spoke to me. Now even more than before, because of the strange and startling times we're in. Everything is changing so quickly (and so devastatingly for many) and it quickly became clear to me that I would melt down if I didn't focus on cultivating some inner calm, inner strength, etc. Easier said than done, but I'm working on it.

Wishing all of you safety and health and heaps of inner fortitude, friends.

I shot this all on my own, in the studio. It was messy and challenging! I'll share my process and some behind the scenes pics (they're kind of hilarious) below.

Scroll over the images below to read about the process of shooting this - it was pretty ridiculous :D

I shot for a composite because I was working along and I knew I'd need to stitch together multiple frames to get the image I was aiming for. This frame was the winner for the hands, specifically.

Then I proceeded to do this.

Trying to time these shots was hard - I was using a phone app as a remote trigger. Shooting tethered or using a radio trigger would have been better, but by the time that occurred to me I was already too covered in dirt to make a change!

Looks so peaceful, but what you can't see is the amazing amount of dirt that got into my ear. And my eyes.

I was all excited to create and started the whole thing fairly spontaneously, so I neglected to put down a tarp - rookie move, ugh. Also, a surprising amount of dirt got THROUGH my clothing, even though I was just sitting still.

It was so messy, but so worth it, I think! And thank goodness for the shopvac haha!

A little help from the magic of Photoshop to layer together a handful of frames and then I added a bit of colour grading to create the finished image you see above (jazzhands!)
